Private Clients - How We Work

As well as its work for Film, Television and Theatre, Wig Specialities prides itself on its excellent and renowned work for the private sector.

There are many and varied reasons why women find themselves in need of good wigs or hair pieces and, particularly in cases of illness and distress, our many years of experience in this field helps our clients to find something which is individually designed and made specifically for them.

Often first time wearers have little or no knowledge of how any of this works and we endeavour to be as helpful and as caring as possible in order to achieve the finest results. It must be stated that there are no ready-to- wear wigs as we only make to order.

The most frequently asked questions are:-

1. How Long Does It Take?

The making of a wig for a new client will take a minimum of three fittings.

The first takes the form of a consultation when we explain in detail how we make the wig and decide on hairstyle and colour. At this time we would usually make a full head shape and take a set of measurements if the client wishes to go ahead.

The second visit is to try the base of the wig for an exact fit and for the client to examine the actual hair we have prepared to make the wig.

The third visit is usually mostly a hairdressing session. The wig will be ready to be cut and styled after we show the client how to put it on and familiarise herself with the appropriate form of attachment. We offer a full cutting and styling service but can also work with a client's own hairdresser to produce a suitable end product for them to cut and finish if so desired.

It is possible to produce a wig in extreme circumstances of illness or distress in around two weeks, but in most cases it is best to give us around three to four weeks.

2. What Are They Made of and Can I Look After It Myself?

All our wigs are made of the highest quality human hair. We are able to offer an exact colour-matching service and can get hair in straight, curly or wavy forms and in varying degrees of thickness and texture.

The hair is individually knotted by hand in our London studio, using the latest materials and lightweight bases. The wigs can be washed and conditioned regularly, following guidelines which our well-trained staff will be happy to explain. We offer a complete after-sales facility including the opportunity for the wigs to be brought to us for washing, styling. Colouring and re-furbishment as and when it is needed. Alternatively we can instruct the client on how to wash her own wig at home and get her the appropriate wig block, brushes etc. to enable her to do this.

3. How Much Does It Cost?

A basic short to medium length wig starts at around £1,800. plus VAT. This cost will always be affected by length, colour and hair type, but there are no unforeseen extras and the basic price includes cutting and styling at our studio in London. In cases of hair loss resulting from chemotherapy the client has a zero VAT rating on completion of the appropriate form.

Home visit, and attendance in hospital - out of London or abroad - can always be discussed.

We charge £70. (in advance) + VAT for the initial consultation but this is redeemable against the wig cost if the client wishes to proceed.

In-house washing and styling costs £45. plus VAT and re-colour from £55. + VAT. Once we have made for a client the details are on file and it is much easier to make further pieces.

Wig Specialities offers full credit card facilities.

Many years of experience combined with tact and discretion helps us to offer a unique and special service to the private client who needs an attractive and professional solution to what can be a distressing and difficult problem.
